The Story of the Family
Château Haut-Surget is a wine estate located in the Lalande de Pomerol appellation, which lies just north of the more famous Pomerol appellation in Bordeaux, France. The wines from Lalande de Pomerol are often compared to those of Pomerol, particularly those from the sandy soils near Libourne. Château Haut-Surget is known for producing Merlot-based red wines, with some Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon also included in the blend. The estate uses traditional winemaking techniques, including long macerations in thermo-regulated cement vats and aging in oak barrels.
Lalande de Pomerol:
The appellation was officially recognised in 1954, after winegrowers in the area were previously allowed to label their wines as Pomerol. The region shares similar soil types with Pomerol, featuring gravelly clay, which is well-suited for growing Merlot.
Château Haut-Surget’s Approach:
The estate emphasises meticulous grape selection, both during the green harvest in July and the harvest itself. The winemaking process involves thermo-regulated cement vats to control temperatures during fermentation and long macerations (4-5 weeks) to extract optimal color and tannins.
Aging:
The wine is aged for about a year in a combination of new and used oak barrels.
Tasting Notes:
Wild bramble berry with clove spice and hints of vanilla. Chewy tannins mix with tart berry fruit to balance out the fresh finish
